Sept. 29 (UPI) — Argentine striker Sergio Aguero suffered a broken rib after getting in a car crash Thursday in Amsterdam.
Premier League power Manchester City confirmed the incidenta Friday morning on its official website. Aguero was riding in a taxi and on his way to the airport after attending a Maluma concert, according to multiple reports. Aguero took a photo with the singer and posted it to his Instagram account on Thursday, hours before the crash. An Amsterdam police department spokesman told ESPN FC that the crash happened when Aguero’s taxi hit a lamppost at about 11 p.m. Two people were taken to the hospital.
“Sergio Aguero will be assessed by Club doctors today after being involved in a road crash on Thursday,” Manchester City’s statement said.
“The City forward was in Holland on his day off and has sustained injuries.”
“He will return to Manchester this morning and his status will be checked ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League clash at Chelsea.”
Aguero was using his day off to visit the Dutch capital when the incident took place.
Sources told ESPN that Aguero could miss up to eight weeks due to the injury.
“Sergio, as you know, has had an accident in Amsterdam and he will be back this afternoon,” City manager Pep Guardiola told the team website.
“I don’t know, I am not a doctor, I don’t know exactly what he has. It was an accident. Fortunately, he will come back and recover as soon as possible.
“It was his day off, I’m not the police. I would prefer to be with Mendy, with Kompany and with Sergio Aguero [but] we will play with eleven.”
“The first impression we have is he has broken the rib. Exactly how many days he will have off, I don’t know right now.”
City faces Chelsea at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Premier League action at Stamford Bridge in London.
Aguero, 29, has seven goals in eight games this season for City. The injury could also put Aguero in jeopardy for international appearances with Argentina. The national squad has a World Cup qualifier on Oct. 5 against Peru and on Oct. 10 against Ecuador.
